World War II started on September 1, 1939 and lasted for 6 years until September 2, 1945. This war involved 104 countries around the world; even those countries that stayed neutral were still affected. The contributing nations were divided into two groups, first being the Allies and the second was the Axis. The Allies were comprised of many nations but the great powers were the Soviet Union, Great Britain, United States, China and others. The Axis was a much smaller group that consisted of Germany, Italy, and Japan. WWII caused huge numbers of military and civilian deaths. The civilian deaths manly consisted from the Holocaust and the first and only use of nuclear weaponry. This massive war left more than 63 million people dead, 33 million of which were civilians, making this the larges and deadliest war in history.
On the eastern front, 10 million soldiers died with 20 million Russian civilians. Germany lost 4 million soldiers in the eastern front and about 3 million where captured by the Russian forces.

The eastern front was involved mainly Germany with the Axis power and the Soviet Union and Poland who were part of the Allies. World War II started in Poland where later part of the Eastern Front would be. The Eastern Front did not always have this name. The Soviet Union referred to it as the Great Patriotic War, while the Germans called it the Eastern Front or the Russian campaign. Hitler’s name for the invasion of Russia is "Operation Barbarossa" named after Frederick Barbarossa who was a medieval Roman emperor.
The eastern front started on June 22, 1941 and ended on May 9, 1945.
Ever since WWI Hitler viewed the Slavs and Russians to be inferior. Even though Hitler’s advisors encouraged him not to start the fighting with the Soviet Union but Hitler did not listen. One of the things that Hitler strived for was to get control of Poland, which was the first thing he did but he wanted the rich black soil that was located in Ukraine. Because Germany did not have good soil and Ukraine was known as the bread basket of Europe, Hitler decided to capture Ukraine and make it a living space for Germans.
